| In our modern world of cell phones, MP3s, I-Pods, Blackberries, video-clips, satellite TV, instant gratification, and go-go-go, we deny ourselves the silence and peace of solitude, contemplation and reflection on our lives and our spirit. During the Medieval Era in Western Europe, religious |
| observance was an essential and required part of everyday life. The Church did not miss the opportunity to use every tool possible to help the parishioner find the transcendent quality of a personal religious experience. The focal point of all this attention was always the main altar, where the spiritual presence of the Church resided. The input to all the senses: Music and song to fill the ears; the smell of burning candles and incense sensors brought the strong sense of smell to a heightened state; for the Christian the Eucharist was eaten – bringing taste into play; the warmth or chill of the room, the confinement of the confessional booth, the solidness of the seating, the way one’s knees felt on the kneelers or carpets combined to make the religious experience one that reached out to all the senses. Today, with the multi-media generation now becoming young parents and the need to reach out to that generation, many churches have developed events and spectaculars to entice, educate and inform, probably for many of the same reason as the Medieval Church ensured that all senses were involved. Today Church services are held in Stadiums with all the trimmings of a rock concert or theatrical production. And why not? It performs the same type of connection involving all the senses and a feeling of connection and oneness with the event and, by extension, God as well. Lessons are still learned and a feeling of community and fellowship is developed for that time. Here at our Altar Page we strive for the goal of helping you find peace in your spirit.
